Laser-cut Jigsaw Woodblocks

Demonstration organized by Lari Gibbons

Description

This two-part event includes a demo and interactive printing session focused on laser-cut relief blocks.

The morning features a step-by-step demonstration showing how to use a laser cutter to produce woodblocks. Topics include image planning, file prep, materials, engraving, and cutting. Examples and resources will be shared, and information will be repeated and cycled as participants come and go.

The afternoon is an interactive event in which attendees are welcome to join the organizing team pulling relief prints from laser-cut blocks in a come-and-go format. The blocks are modular and may be used in a variety of ways, enabling attendees to create their own take-away examples with different outcomes. Assistants will be on hand to demonstrate processes, to facilitate participation, and to encourage playful experimentation. The event provides resources for participants to work first-hand with the blocks and to generate new ideas and approaches, producing examples that can be used in educational and professional settings. Materials will be provided until they run out.

Additional topics may include when to use a laser cutter (versus other CNC equipment), accessing laser cutters in a variety of settings (academic, community, professional), and considerations in acquiring a laser cutter.
