LOCAL to GLOBAL: Zygote Press Artists in Residence (1999-2022)
Exhibition curated by Liz Maugans and Ben Levy
Description
Zygote Press is the nonprofit community printmaking studio in downtown Cleveland. Building on 25 years of history, Zygote showcases a diverse range of contemporary regional, national, and international artists through residencies and exchange programs. Artists continue to create powerful, intense, political, beautiful, and meaningful works of art in print.
The early years of Zygote’s Artist-In-Residence (AIR) program focused on providing artists with their first experience with printmaking, introducing them to etching, screenprinting, letterpress, lithography, and alternative techniques. With the success of expanding local artists' artistic practices, Zygote began working with artists from all over the world. Artists from more than twenty countries were reached with help from the Cleveland Foundation’s Creative Fusion Residency and a two-decade-long exchange with the Grafikwerkstatt and the City of Dresden, Germany. Nationally, an exchange with artists from Alaska was supported through the Rasmuson Foundation. Several other residency programs enabled artists to create significant bodies of work while connecting with–and becoming a part of–the larger arts community in Cleveland.
The exhibition features 67 works from 37 artists.
